Albertsons enhances security with Alvarado’s GDO gates and modular post and rail
Background
SuperValu is the third largest grocery retailer in the United States, operating store brands such as Star Market, Jewel-Osco and Albertsons. One of its Albertsons grocery stores in Washington was experiencing a high rate of theft. The entry/exit doors were not easily monitored by store personnel, which made it very easy to walk out the door with a cart full of “free” groceries.
SuperValu came to Alvarado for expert advice and time-tested products to help reduce theft at its store.
Challenge
SuperValu wanted to enhance security at its store without changing the existing floor plan. They wanted to create physical barriers at the front of the store that did not slow entry, but prevented easy exiting and directed traffic through the checkout lanes.
Security measures needed to be implemented that allowed the store to feel the same, while directing the flow of customers and reducing the amount of theft.
Solution
After reviewing the floor plan and assessing the specific needs of the store, Alvarado recommended installation of its posts and railing near the entrance and two GDO gates for cart entrance.
A store-specific post and rail configuration was developed to direct traffic in and out of the store. The GDO gates were suggested for use on either side of the store since they are single-direction, self closing gates that make it easy to push a cart in to the store, but do not allow a cart to be pushed out.
Alvarado Advantage
Alvarado has been providing durable and reliable queuing, public entry and asset protection products to retail customers since 1956. Post and rail configurations are ideal for customers looking to control the flow of people.
The modular posts and railing can be configured in a variety of ways to match a store floor plan. Typical uses include queuing, channeling of customers, dividing areas and cart corrals. Alvarado stocks railings in dozens of lengths to meet most demands. Since every application is unique, Alvarado also provides custom length railing on demand.
Pedestrian gates, like the GDO, function as “enter only” doors to pass grocery carts through and are often used to complete the barrier that the posts and rails create.
Impact
Albertsons integration of posts and railing, as well as single-direction gates at both exits, has created a traffic flow pattern that improves security without sacrificing the comfort of its customers.
