Customized green retractable belt stanchions utilized for routine maintenance procedures
Background
Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP) is a Dual Unit Pressurized Water Reactor on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. It sends approximately 1,700 Mega-Watts of electricity down the lines to support the Pennsylvania-Jersey- Maryland (PJM) grid. This plant is considered a “base load plant” which is relied upon to maintain reliability and run for extended periods of time. As such, CCNPP needs to perform on-line maintenance while maintaining a high reliability rating for power operations.
Challenge
CCNPP needed a way to protect various redundant power plant equipment in the event of malfunction, when performing on-line maintenance and to meet plant operational requirements. They were looking for a barrier solution that was highly visible, flame resistant, easy to relocate yet stable enough to meet seismic requirements. They turned to Alvarado for expert advice and assistance.

Alvarado Advantage
Alvarado offers several custom powder coat finishes on its retractable belt stanchions and was able to match the needs of CCNPP. Alvarado also produced custom green belts with “PROTECTED” stenciled in white. The addition of an 8-way positionable sign holder provided the exact solution the power plant was looking for.
Impact
Calvert Cliffs has integrated the new green stanchions and signs into their procedures for protection of equipment. The stanchions are easy to move from job to job, quick to set up and stand out prominently to protect plant equipment and personnel.
The new colors and robust design that CCNPP and Alvarado developed is being adopted to all other Constellation Energy plants.
